OR28 - Outcome of Non-Surgical Root Canal Treatment in Patient with Anti-Bone Resorptive Use

Bisphosphonates are a typical and widely used anti-bone resorptive or anti-angiogenic medication to treat resorptive bone disease. There is a growing association between bisphosphonates and osteonecrosis of the jaw. The current recommendation is to avoid extraction of teeth in favor of conservative treatments such as non-surgical root canal treatment (NSRCT). However, the success rate of NSRCT on patients with current or previous treatment of anti-resorptive or anti-angiogenic medications are currently unknown. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of anti-resorptive or anti-angiogenic medications on the outcome of non-surgical root canal treatment. The dental records of all patients who received anti-resorptive or anti-angiogenic medication medications and NSRCT from 2005-2020 at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry Department of Endodontics were retrieved from an electronic searching using Axium. Two calibrated board-certified endodontists evaluated the preoperative, postoperative, and follow up (6 months-2 years) outcomes using the periapical index (PAI) scores. The teeth were classified as healed (healthy apical tissues, PAI ≤ 2, no signs or symptoms), healing (no signs and symptoms, PAI > 2 but reduced from the initial PAI score), and not-healed (presence of apical periodontitis, signs and/or symptoms, PAI > 2). Univariate descriptive analysis was carried out and preliminary data showed no difference in the outcome of NSRCT between patients with current or previous treatment of anti-resorptive or anti-angiogenic medications. Anti-resorptive or anti-angiogenic medications do not influence the outcome of non-surgical root canal treatment.
