TTP-7 - To The Point Lecture: Is Periapical Imaging Passé? Stationary Intraoral Tomosynthesis Applications in an Endodontic Practice

Historically a preoperative periapical radiograph has been the imaging modality of choice for the purposes of diagnosis and assessment of root canal difficulty. However, this single image cannot illustrate all relevant information for treatment planning purposes. As a result, it was not uncommon to uncover an unexpected finding during treatment that would potentially impact the long-term outcome and prognosis. Cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) has exploded onto the endodontic scene over the last decade because of the limitations of two-dimensional imaging. CBCT revolutionized endodontic diagnosis and treatment planning, but it is not without limitations. Because of the amount of information obtained with a scan, coincidental findings are common and thorough evaluation of the entire CBCT volume is a time-consuming exercise. Stationary intraoral tomosynthesis (sIOT) is an emerging technology designed to fill the gap between conventional two-dimensional imaging and CBCT. This seminar will introduce sIOT and discuss its applications in an endodontic private practice setting-highlighting the advantages over conventional imaging and contrasting its use with CBCT.
