Behavior guidance techniques, both non-pharmacological and pharmacological, are used to alleviate anxiety, nurture a positive dental attitude, and perform quality dental care safely in children, adolescents, and persons with special health care needs. Selection of techniques must be customized to the needs of the individual patient and the skills of the practitioner. Strategies to effectively implement these behavior guidance techniques, such as communication guidance, tell-show-do, voice control, non-verbal communication, positive reinforcement, distraction, and desensitization will be reviewed. Nitrous oxide inhalation, and advanced behavior guidance techniques such as sedation and general anesthesia will also be reviewed.

Learning Objectives:

Evaluate patient and parental behaviors which my contribute to behavior challenges during endodontic treatment
Apply non-pharmacological behavior guidance techniques in endodontic treatment to alleviate anxiety and create a positive interaction with pediatric patients
Identify those pediatric patients who require advanced behavior guidance, and how to safely incorporate pharmocological sedation and general anesthesia to their treatment
