S-3 - Surgical Outcomes in the Last Decade: What Have We Learned?

Modern clinical practice requires dentists to be familiar with new developments in materials, instruments, and procedures to assist their patients in electing the most beneficial long-term treatment option to maintain oral health and function.
Endodontic surgery has evolved tremendously in the last decade into a microsurgical procedure. Due to advancements in dental materials and surgical techniques, endodontic microsurgery has greater predictable patient and biological outcomes, in some instances, a more conservative treatment alternative to non-surgical retreatment. However, accepted evaluation criteria to assess biological outcomes and the actual success rates have been challenged with the introduction of 3D imaging, revealing different radiographic healing patterns.
This presentation will discuss microsurgery techniques as related to prognostic factors, expected outcomes, and new 3D outcome evaluation methods. In conclusion, the participants should be able to understand the principles of endodontic microsurgery that will affect surgical outcomes and identify limited studies that are in literature trying to understand the healing patterns expected after intervention.
