This session will give the participant an overview of TMDs and other orofacial pain conditions as they relate to endodontic practice. This includes prevalence of painful TMDs in the general and endodontic populations, their comorbidity with endodontic pain, and the clinical presentation of TMDs and other relevant conditions (e.g., neurovascular, neuropathic) mimicking endodontic pain. We will discuss the brief screening methods for TMD pain that are useful in a busy endodontic setting, and the most useful examination findings that may indicate TMD as the etiology of or as a contributing factor to an endodontic patient’s chief complaint. We will also discuss diagnostic measures that will help endodontists distinguish pain of endodontic origin from pain of TMD or other origin. Case complexity is an important factor to consider for patients with pain complaints, and evidence-based management of patients with TMDs will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

Discuss the prevalence of painful TMDs as an etiology or a contributing factor of the patient’s pain complaint in endodontic practice, and recognize signs and symptoms that may suggest painful TMD
Utilize brief TMD screening tools in their practice to identify those who may need a more thorough TMD examination, as well as identify signs and symptoms that may suggest another non-endodontic cause of the patient’s pain complaint with awareness of relevant differential diagnostic measures
Explain the evidence-based approach to TMD care and recognize factors that contribute to making patients more complex
