S-6 - Is Root Amputation Still a Viable Surgical Option?

Root amputation is a procedure under the umbrella of endodontic surgery. The primary indications for root amputation include deep furcation involvement, severe bone loss on one individual root, vertical root fractures, persisting periapical pathology, resorptions, , subgingival root caries, and iatrogenic root perforations. Root amputation may be especially important when a tooth with high strategic value needs to be preserved. This lecture will review the indication or root amputation in comparison to other endodontic surgical procedures such as root-end surgery and crown resection, as well as extraction and implant placement. Techniques and prognosis will be discussed.
