Unlike dental implants, an autotransplanted tooth has several advantages, including proprioception of the periodontal ligament, continued skeletal growth, and potentially better esthetics, especially in growing patients. Surgical extrusion, intentional replantation, and tooth autotransplantation have been well-known clinical procedures in the past, supported by scientific evidence and numerous clinical studies. The advent of rehabilitation with titanium implants has reduced the use of these successful treatments in daily practice and the current average clinical perception is of a risky treatment, which, in the highest percentage of cases, can evolve into ankylosis and/or resorption. This perception is due to the confusion of data from studies of replantation of avulsed teeth, in which the biological and clinical conditions are completely different. The new trend in the extreme conservation and preservation of healthy natural tissues is leading to a rediscovery of this type of treatment, especially thanks to the digital workflow.
This presentation is based on current clinical and scientific evidence and is intended to provide dentists with a detailed background, clinical procedures, and outcome of tooth autotransplantation.
