(PR05) 3D Printed Models Teach Pre-Doctoral Students How to Perform Endodontic Access

This study evaluated the use of three-dimensional (3D) prototyped models as an educational aid for teaching endodontic access at a pre-clinical level. Micro-CT scans of human extracted teeth were used to design and prototype 3D models simulating two types of endodontic access cavities for each tooth (ideal and incomplete). 58 students from the pre-clinical endodontics course voluntarily participated in this study. The participants were randomly divided into two groups with different viewing sessions that took place before and after performing an endodontic access on a natural tooth. A questionnaire was given to the students after they manipulated the 3D models for five minutes. The same procedure was repeated during later sessions for the premolar and molar models. The data was statistically analyzed (significance set at 5%). No significant differences were observed between the groups (p>.05). The 3D models were considered realistic (94.85%) and with an adequate size (71.42%). Most respondents said that the models met their expectations (86%) and should be incorporated into future classes (93.4%). More than 90% of the respondents agreed that the models aided in the comprehension of internal anatomic features. Students of both groups reported an increased confidence in performing endodontic accesses after manipulating the 3D models (p <.05). About 80% answered that visualizing the 3D models helped improve their endodontic access. In conclusion, the results suggest that realistic 3D printed models could be a significant tool used to improve the learning experience of endodontics at a pre-doctoral level.
