(PR25) An Evaluation of Treatment Outcomes of Root-End Surgery in a Postgraduate Endodontics Program

The objectives of this study are to: 1) evaluate the success and survival rates of root-end surgery completed at NYU College of Dentistry (NYUCD) Department of Endodontics; and 2) investigate possible effects of patient and treatment variables on treatment outcomes. This is an observational study on subjects who received root-end surgery between January 2015 and December 2021. The retrospective component of the study includes subjects who had at least a one-year post-operative follow-up with a periapical radiograph and/or a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan. The prospective component of the study includes patients who had to be brought in for a follow-up. Patient-, tooth-, and treatment-related data are collected. Tooth survival is recorded and treatment success is determined using the Molven and Rud criteria for periapical images. Out of 1095 subjects identified as having had root-end surgery, 396 have been screened to date, and 94 subjects (teeth (n)=133) have been included (73 anteriors, 34 premolars, 26 molars). The average patient age is 49.9±14.9; 35% are male and 65% are female. At the time of this preliminary reporting of data survival/success rates are 73.1% and 55.8%, respectively. Inadequate quality of retro-fill (length, deviation and voids) is associated with higher survival (p < 0.05) and older age is associated with more healing (p < 0.05). Our preliminary conclusion indicates that age and quality of the retro-fill may affect the success and survival of root-end surgery.
