(PR38) Setting Times of Several Bioceramics Used in Vital Pulp Therapy in the Presence of Human Blood

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the setting times of several bioceramic materials commonly used in vital pulp therapy in the presence of human blood. Methods and materials: four polymethyl-methacrylate plates were prepared with 16 wells drilled in each. Samples were prepared of the following: ProRoot MTA (MTA; Dentsply Maillefer, Tulsa, OK), Endosequence BC Root Repair Material (ESRRM; Brasseler USA, Savannah, GA), Neoputty (NP; Avalon Biomed, Houston, TX), and Biodentine (BD; Septodont, Lancaster, PA) and then distributed among the plates. The plates were then submerged in dishes containing either human blood, saline, distilled water, or no liquid and then placed in an incubator at 37°C with 100% humidity, then allowed to set. They were tested for complete setting by a Gillmore Needle Apparatus at 2, 3, 4, 6, 24 hours and finally again at one week.

Results: In the blood experimental group, Biodentine and MTA were set within three hours while the NP and ESRRM did not set until 24 hours. In both the wet and dry control conditions, neither the NP or ESRRM had set even at one week.

Conclusions: Biodentine and MTA set within a matter of hours in the experimental condition, while both putty materials took 24 hours to set in the experimental condition and, within the confines of this study, never fully set in fully dry or fully wet conditions.
