Water Fluoridation 101

This “Fluoridation 101” session is designed to introduce novice state and local program officials and advocates to the underlying principles and practices of community water fluoridation, fluoridation policy, risk communications, and available educational resources. Learners will explore basic background information on how fluoride works to reduce cavities. They will also learn how CDC works with national partners, states, communities, and water operators to support the U.S. population having access to optimally fluoridated water to prevent tooth decay, and how they can effectively communicate community water fluoridation’s benefits to the public and decision-makers. Representatives from ADA and ASTDD will provide information on available and upcoming communication resources. The session will end with an extended Q&A session with the full panel. This session is designed as a forum for individuals with little or no experience in community water fluoridation principles and practices to gain basic knowledge in a welcoming small group setting.
