Trauma can take many forms (e.g., intimate partner violence, abuse/neglect, community violence, or even traumatic healthcare experiences and much more). Trauma will accumulate in the long-term condition of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is estimated that over half of the U.S. population have experienced at least one adverse childhood experience (ACE), and about 6 out of every 100 people (or 6% of the population) will have PTSD at some point in their lives. Oral health care providers and especially dental public health practitioners should be be aware of the impact trauma can have on overall health, what barriers PTSD and the current systems create, and how to implement trauma-informed practices in our care delivery systems. This session will provide information to support collaborating with the patient, mental health providers, and the whole dental team to build an inclusive delivery care model to support the health of an individual.
