The Basic Screening Survey (BSS) for children is the primary data source for states to monitor oral health status and disparities in Head Start programs and among school children. Demographic information is necessary to assess health disparities. States may use different methods for and have challenges in collecting demographics. This session is jointly conducted by ASTDD, CDC, and state oral health programs to discuss best practices to collect child demographics for BSS. The session will specify recommended guidance to optimize and standardize the process for collecting BSS demographics. Speakers from selected states will share their real-world experience obtaining demographics from the Department of Education or using other methods, discuss the rationale, pros and cons of each method, and describe their challenges and solutions. There will be interactive discussions with attendees to share their experience and perspectives of different methods to collect demographics for BSS to inform best practice.
