An adequately trained and competent workforce is required to optimize population oral health. The purpose of the American Board of Dental Public Health Symposium is to re-examine the dental public health specialty under the prism of social, economic and epidemiologic changes that shape the oral health of our communities.
Over the last 24 months the Board has embarked on a journey to understand workforce issues and DPH competencies at work. Stakeholder analyses included surveys and qualitative interviews of students, recent grads, program directors, employers, and Diplomates. The goals of the ABDPH Symposium are to present recent findings from the Board’s strategic planning process and new evidence to stimulate discussion. Three presentations will update participants on i) the job analysis findings; ii) current employer requirements along with new trends of employment; and iii) how modern public health science and technology skills may be used to serve underserved communities in need.

Identify changes and trends in the use of dental public health competencies at the place of employment
Provide new knowledge regarding the dental public health employment environment
Introduce new science and technology trends with the potential to address the needs of under-served communities
