Integrative Justice: A Healthcare Approach to Treatment Courts

This session will detail a healthcare approach to treatment courts based on the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Court model. Presenters will provide a timeline for the growth of the Tribal Court’s client-centered Healing to Wellness Treatment Program with its reliance and focus on public health, medical, and nursing theories. They will demonstrate how the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Court implements the three components for the integration of public health principles into the justice system. They will provide practical examples where prevention, intervention, and treatment can provide courts with better outcomes. They will explain the integration of cultural health literacy into the Tribal Healing to Wellness court model, which is implementing NADCP best practices through a five-year grant funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. They also will cover how cultural health literacy can provide a bridge when utilized with medical assisted therapy.
