U.S. Congressman
Maryland's 6th Congressional District
Congressman David Trone was elected in 2018 to serve Maryland's Sixth Congressional District, where his top priority in Congress is ending the opioid and addiction epidemic that has devastated the entire nation.
In 2016, David lost his nephew Ian to a fentanyl overdose after working closely with Ian for over five years while he was in and out of recovery. After extensive first-hand experience supporting a loved one with substance use disorder, David was able to understand the challenges and barriers for many to recovery.
In Congress, David founded the Freshmen Working Group on Addiction, a bipartisan group of 64 freshmen lawmakers dedicated to ending the addiction epidemic in the country. Thus far, the group has visited Johns Hopkins Medical facilities and the National Institute of Health (NIH) to see the latest research on addiction, introduced 25 pieces of legislation to end the epidemic, and promoted practices and policies to tackle the crisis from every angle.
In June, Trone wrote about the progress the group has made within Congress, acknowledging the long way we still have to go to stop the spread of addiction. In November, he wrote about how to ensure the settlement money from pharmaceutical companies like Purdue Pharma goes toward solving the root causes of the epidemic. David’s own bill, which would provide $7.5 billion for State Opioid Response (SOR) Grants over five years, passed through the House of Representatives last year.
David grew up on a chicken and hog farm with his mother, a grade school teacher, and his father, a WWII veteran and member of the U.S. Army Reserves. Though the family lost the farm to bankruptcy, David was given an opportunity through education. He earned a Bachelor's degree from Furman University and a Master's in Business Administration (MBA) from the Wharton School of Business by taking out student loans.
It was in graduate school that he met his wife, June, and opened his first store selling soda and beer. Through a lot of hard work and good fortune, that single store grew into a business with more than 200 stores in 24 states and 7,000 employees nationwide. It is this expertise in business and management that David brings to his time in Congress.
