Lily J. Lou, MD, FAAP, currently serves as Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Director of Government Relations at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She also chairs the Section on Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Lou received her undergraduate degree in Genetics from the University of California at Davis and her medical training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She then completed her pediatric residency at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and Clinics. She pursued a Neonatal Fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine and also completed a fellowship in medical education at the University of New Mexico. She is board certified in General Pediatrics and in Neonatology. Over her career, Dr. Lou has occupied the rank of Chief Medical Officer in state government (Alaska), served as an Executive Medical Director of a children’s hospital (Children’s Hospital @ Providence, Providence Alaska Medical Center), and served in multiple roles in state and national leadership in the American Academy of Pediatrics. Her scholarly career has spanned the range of neonatology investigation from basic bench research (homeobox gene regulation in Drosophila and mouse) to clinical research (impact of an exercise intervention in NICU graduates to address vulnerable child syndrome). Her current goals are focused on combining her interests in clinical neonatology, public health, education, advocacy and leadership development to address some of the clinical and public health challenges in the field of neonatology and to help develop the community of neonatologists.
