Dr. Bratberg studies the essential roles community pharmacists play regarding opioid safety, opioid overdose, harm reduction and opioid use disorders, and advocates for their increased role in medication access, public health promotion, and policy change. In 2015, he was appointed to the Rhode Island (RI) Governor’s Overdose Prevention and Intervention Task Force and co-wrote the RI state plan. He is a consultant or co-investigator on two federal grants, a randomized controlled trial of pharmacists’ use of a collaborative practice agreement to initiate and manage medications for opioid use disorder and a multi-state, randomized control trial testing the effectiveness of a pharmacist and pharmacy focused intervention to improve naloxone provision, nonprescription syringe access and buprenorphine dispensing in community pharmacies. He co-teaches an interprofessional “grand challenge” course on opioid use disorders and is an associate editor of the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association (JAPhA).
