Chris Delcher is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science in the College of Pharmacy and the Director of the Institute for Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy at the University of Kentucky.
His interest in epidemiology began during his service as a Peace Corps Volunteer in El Salvador in 1998. That transformative experience led him to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned a Master’s degree in environmental science and engineering. His work abruptly jumped from research on farm pollution in North Carolina to analyzing HIV surveillance data for the Virginia Department of Health in Richmond, Virginia. His passion for research never abated during those years as a working epidemiologist and he returned to the University of Florida, finishing his PhD in 2014 in the midst of the opioid epidemic.
His current research focuses on the epidemiology of prescription drug use from data obtained during medical and pharmacy encounters, understanding the intended and unintended consequences of drug policy and its effects on population health, and enhancing public health surveillance systems in high and low resource environments.
