Dr. Joe Smyser is the CEO of The Public Good Projects (PGP), a public health nonprofit that specializes in large-scale media monitoring programs, social and behavior change interventions, and cross-sector initiatives.
He has designed the core strategies for several of the United States' largest opioid crisis programs. With Google and Facebook, Dr. Smyser assisted in the creation of digital interventions directing Americans to reputable sources of information at the start of the epidemic. Along with the leading national addiction advocacy nonprofit Shatterproof and consulting firm McKinsey, Dr. Smyser wrote the nationally recognized Strategy to End Stigma. With WPP, Dr. Smyser helped found the National Opioid Action Coalition (NOAC). In Florida, Dr. Smyser has led a successful three-year opioid awareness and stigma reduction campaign in Orange County.
In Pennsylvania, Dr. Smyser, in partnership with the state’s Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs, Penn State, and Shatterproof, and working with dozens of addiction and treatment centers and groups, helps lead the state’s opioid stigma campaign. Finally, Dr. Smyser has executive produced two documentaries on the opioid crisis, working with community based organizations in Orange County Florida and on Martha’s Vineyard.
