Brandon del Pozo is a postdoctoral researcher in addiction, drug policy, public health and policing at the Miriam Hospital and the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University. He comes to this work after spending 23 years in policing: 19 in the NYPD, and four as the chief of police of Burlington, Vermont. His NYPD experience included commanding two patrol precincts, and working in intelligence, policy, and strategic planning. As chief of Burlington, he led the city's public health response to the opioid crisis, where he used science and evidence to bring about innovations associated with reducing fatal opioid overdoses by 50%. He has a PhD in political philosophy from the City University of New York Graduate Center, a master's of public administration from Harvard, a master's in criminal justice from John Jay College, and received his bachelor's from Dartmouth. He began his career as a police officer patrolling a beat in Brooklyn, where he was born.
