Dr. Carroll is an NIH-funded, CDC-funded medical anthropologist and public health scholar who has been researching the impacts of drug control policies and the political economies of the drug markets on people who use drugs for more than ten years. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC) and an adjunct research faculty in the Department of Medicine at Brown University (Providence, RI). Her public health expertise lies in illicit substance use, strategies for opioid overdose prevention, and criminal-legal responses to substance use. Her research has been published in venues including American Journal of Public Health, Journal of Addiction Medicine, Drug & Alcohol Dependence, Addictive Behaviors, AIDS & Behavior, AIDS Care, Medical Anthropology Quarterly, International Journal of Drug Policy, and Contemporary Drug Problems. Dr. Carroll serves as a subject matter expert and scientific consultant for the HIDTA/CDC Overdose Response Strategy. She is also a proud member of the Board of Advisors at the North Carolina Survivors' Union, one of the largest drug user unions in the United States.
