HSI Special Agent Ed Byrne: SA Byrne is currently assigned to the San Diego Office and is a member of Narcotics Task Force, Team 10 (opioid overdose death investigations) in San Diego County. SA Byrne has, to date, worked the scene of more than 435 fentanyl-related deaths. He is a member of DHS’ hazardous material working group regarding chemicals and WMD’s. SA Byrne is designated as a Subject Matter Expert for law enforcement matters regarding fentanyl, precursors, illicit diversion of chemicals, clandestine manufacturing, smuggling/transit, handling/processing, and field testing. Ed has consulted in multiple investigations related to the emerging international trends of the illicit manufacturing and smuggling of fentanyl and its analogues with a multitude of federal, state, and foreign law enforcement agencies. Special Agent Byrne has addressed the 9th Circuit Court of Appeal regarding overdose death investigations and the background of fentanyl. Ed is a graduate of San Diego State University as well as the Dale Carnegie Course, and the Critical Thinking Program. NTF Team 10 was highlighted in the HBO documentary “Crime of the Century.” Special Agent Byrne has taught a multitude of State and Federal agencies and law enforcement personnel on conducting Over Dose Death Investigations, he also engages with family groups that have lost loved ones to the Opioid Epidemic. Ed has twice received the “Pursuit of Justice” award, presented by the United States Attorney’s office in the Southern District of California.
