Christine Bethune is a macro social worker who received her MSW from Virginia Commonwealth University in May 2020. Christine has been working at Virginia Medicaid's Department of Medical Assistances Services (DMAS) since fall 2019. She works as the grant coordinator on a $4.9 million Centers of Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) Substance Use-Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment (SUPPORT) Act Section 1003 Grant Virginia was awarded in 2019. The SUPPORT Act grant's purpose is to expand substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and recovery support service capacity throughout the state. Some projects Christine and the grant team work on includes: Emergency Department Bridge Clinics implementation, provider training and technical assistance, state-wide SUD needs assessment and provider capacity assessment, strength-based assessments, and connections to care upon re-entry for the legal/carceral population. Christine's interests are in social justice and health equity to support individual's right to self-determination and to promote individual's access to the highest quality of life.
