Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein is Professor of the Practice and Vice Dean for Public Health Practice and Community Engagement at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He also is the director of the Bloomberg American Health Initiative, which partners with government agencies and local organizations and provides full scholarships for public health degrees to people working across the country to stop the overdose crisis. Previously, Dr. Sharfstein served as health commissioner of Baltimore, where he led a citywide effort to expand access to effective treatment for opioid use disorder. He also served as Principal Deputy Commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration fand as Secretary of Maryland's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. He is the author of the Public Health Crisis Survival Guide: Leadership and Management in Trying Times, and the co-author of The Opioid Epidemic: What Everyone Needs to Know.
