PDMP Interstate Data Sharing and Electronic Health Record Integration

Increasing data sharing between prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) and integrating PDMP data with electronic health records (EHR) are national goals. This session presents methods by which PDMPs are utilizing the RxCheck Hub to achieve these goals.

Presenters will outline initiatives that enhance the capabilities of PDMP-EHR integration, such as in state-operated health information exchanges (HIEs), and that allow small, independent practices and rural healthcare facilities to participate. Speakers from Nebraska’s PDMP and RxCheck will highlight successful strategies and describe valuable lessons learned from reducing barriers to integration.

Presenters will describe how the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are combining resources to connect RxCheck Hub and the eHealth Exchange Hub, thus leveraging EHR systems’ connections to the eHealth Exchange to query PDMPs. This can change the national landscape on interstate PDMP data sharing by leveraging the power of data and generating efficiencies. By reducing barriers to accessing PDMP data within clinical workflow through PDMP-EHR integration, states can both inform clinical practice and improve patient care. While many clinicians are able to access PDMP data through their EHR, this initiative strives to remove remaining barriers. This solution is sustainable, scalable, and critical to the future success of PDMPs, particularly for those rural states with less financial resources.

The IJIS Institute will also discuss the value of the eHealth Exchange integration and RxCheck’s innovative integration approach that eases implementation and the maintenance process.

Presenters will describe how CDC, BJA, and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology have worked with several systems, including Nebraska’s CyncHealth HIE program, on integrating PDMP data within EHRs, pharmacy dispensing systems, and their statewide HIE through the RxCheck Hub. Participants will hear how they have done this and what results have been achieved.
