Innovative states are developing ways to use prescription drug monitoring (PDMP) data to help prescribers reduce the risk of their patients overdosing on or misuing prescription controlled substances. This session presents two such developments.

West Virginia’s PDMP informs healthcare providers of the patients with the highest risk of overdose death, i.e. patients with suspected non-fatal overdoses, when the provider requests a patients’ prescription history. Receipt of this information provides an opportunity for clinicians to intervene to prevent subsequent overdose. Presenters will feature survey results for prescribers and findings on the evaluation of prescriber habits after receiving a suspected non-fatal overdose notification.

Kentucky’s PDMP uses a sophisticated algorithm to suggest to prescribers, pharmacists, and their respective delegates whether selecting certain states would increase their probability of accessing accurate data within other PDMPs. This novel strategy, Informed Interstate PDMP Data Sharing, increases the user’s ability to see all prescriptions issued to their patients and to prevent doctor shopping.
