Identifying Costs of Substance Use in the Workforce and Engaging Employers to Create Recovery-Friendly Workplaces

This session will benefit employers, agencies, and companies by exploring the costs of substance use in the workplace, as well as the advantages of providing a workplace conducive to recovery and employing those in recovery.

The first presentation will address the cost to US employers ― estimated at $193 billion ― resulting from employee substance use, including lost productivity, workplace accidents, turnover, absenteeism, and increased healthcare expenses. Participants will learn to access an easy-to-use, validated, free calculator that estimates the costs noted above, as well as substantial costs saved by providing appropriate options for employees. The user enters the state, business type (construction, entertainment, etc.), and number of employees, and the calculator returns an itemized report on these costs/cost savings.

The second presentation will describe New Hampshire’s Recovery Friendly Workplace (RFW) initiative. Launched by Gov. Chris Sununu in 2018, it was the first statewide initiative of its kind to engage the business sector in addressing substance use disorder (SUD) and supporting employees in recovery. RFW challenges the stigma around SUD and supports employees directly or indirectly impacted by SUD. This approach is good for employees and business as it lessens the costs associated with turnover, absenteeism, presenteeism, and more. Topics will include case studies, accomplishments, best practices, and national expansion of the model.

The final presentation will share the experience of one RFW employer. Chameleon Group’s journey began with one employee’s addiction and evolved into a changing workplace.
