The opioid crisis has taken a devastating toll on families nationwide. Over the last two decades, rates of opioid use disorder and neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome grew exponentially. There are opportunities to address the needs of families by working together and addressing upstream opportunities that may prevent substance use disorder. This session will focus on public health and family-centered approaches to improving outcomes for families, highlighting federal efforts, as well as lessons learned from a recently launched Maternal Opioid Misuse (MOM) initiative in Tennessee called Firefly, funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation.

Learning Objectives:

Describe upstream opportunities to impact substance use disorder and its impact on families
Identify federally funded programs that may support state and community efforts to improve the health and well-being of mothers, children, and families
Identify barriers to treatment for pregnant people with opioid use disorder
Describe “whole person” systems of care for families affected by the opioid crisis
