Using Peer Support Specialists to Create a Culture of Health

Often rural and other underserved regions in the United States not only have multiple negative social drivers of health, but also struggle to maintain the most basic healthcare infrastructure. Both of these issues can severely impact residents seeking to remain in remission or recovery from SUD. In this visioning session, we shall discuss (1) our novel on-line program for training Kentucky Certified Adult Peer Support Specialists and (2) how we have utilized graduates of this program in Owen County, Kentucky, to extend and grow its healthcare infrastructure as they are also providing meaningful support to persons with SUD. In our discussion, we shall provide a “grassroots” model for how to create a Culture of Health when the framework for basic healthcare and social services is missing.
