Augusto B Federici is the Director of the Department of Haematology and Transfusion Medicine at the L. Sacco University Hospital in Milan, Italy. He also serves as an associate professor of haematology at the Department of Oncology and Oncologic Haematology, University of Milan. He has also been recognised as Professor of Haematology by the Academy of Italian Haematologists. He received his medical degree from the University of Milan, and subsequently earned specialty degrees in clinical and experimental haematology, oncology and internal medicine from the University of Pavia, Italy. He has also served as a visiting scientist at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California; the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington; and the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands.
Dr Federici’s research interests include the molecular basis of inherited and acquired defects of haemostasis, the structure and function of von Willebrand factor (VWF) in inherited and acquired conditions, and cancer-related thrombosis and haemostasis. He was the Chair of the Sub-Committee on VWF of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and member of the Scientific Committee on Hemostasis of the American Society of Hematology. He currently is a member of the Committee on von Willebrand Disease and Rare Bleeding Disorders of the World Federation of Haemophilia and serves as scientific coordinator of the Type 3 von Willebrand International Registries and Inhibitor Prospective Study (3 WINTERS-IPS).
Dr Federici has authored or co-authored more than 210 original research articles in peer-reviewed journals. He has also been involved as an editorial board member for international journals such as Haemophilia, British Journal of Haematology and the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis.
