Ellis Neufeld is Physician-in-Chief and Executive Vice President of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, USA, where he holds the John and Lorine Thrasher Chair in Pediatric Medicine. He received his MD and PhD from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. After residency and fellowship training in Pediatrics, Medical Genetics and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Boston Children’s Hospital and Dana–Farber Cancer Institute, he served on the Harvard Medical School Faculty for 32 years before moving to St. Jude in 2017. Dr Neufeld leads the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded Harvard Blood Scholars training program. In addition, he was previously Director of the Boston Hemophilia Center and Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network (ATHN).
Dr Neufeld’s interest in protein C arose during his PhD studies, from 1982 to 1983. During this time, he was fortunate to observe the first purification of human thrombomodulin (the endothelial protein C activation cofactor) from placentas that were treated with the protease inhibitor and neurotoxin di-isopropyl-fluorophosphate.
