Full professor
Department of Health Sciences, University of Piemonte Orientale, Novara, Italy
Antonia Follenzi is a MD, PhD and Professor of Histology at the University of Piemonte Orientale in Novara Italy.
She graduated in Medicine (1992) and in 2001 received a PhD in Human Oncology from the University of Torino working with prof. L. Naldini in gene therapy. She spent one year in Israel at the Weizmann Institute of Science working in the lab of Prof. Yarden. From 2003 to 2010 she worked at the Einstein College of Medicine in New York with prof. S. Gupta studying cell therapy for Hemophilia A. She is a full professor at the University of Piemonte Orientale in Novara since 2017. She obtained competitive grants from Telethon (Italy) and EU-Horizon 2020 to pursue her studies on cell and gene therapy for Hemophilia A implementing the use of Lentiviral Vectors for gene therapy application and developing models of endothelial cells for cell therapy and combining the two approaches. She won several prizes for her work on Hemophilia from American Liver Foundation (2005), Young Investigator Award from European Society of Gene and Cell Therapy (2008), and in 2010 she received the CSL-Behring Prof. Heimburger Award for scientist working on coagulation diseases. Her current research focuses on further optimizing gene transfer for hemophilia A by modulating FVIII expression using novel promoters to further restrict FVIII expression in cellular types that contribute to the immune tolerance to the coagulation factor by the involvement of T regulatory cells. With her group generated patient-specific disease-free induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and differentiated them into functional endothelial cells (ECs) as a target for cell therapy. She has competence in several scientific fields including molecular biology, coagulation, immunology and gene therapy.
