Assistant Professor of Medicine/Hematology
Durham VA Medical Center, Duke University Medical Center
Dr. Ammon M. Fager, MD, PhD is a Staff Physician in Hematology/Oncology at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Durham, NC and an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology at Duke University. Dr. Fager completed his MD and PhD degrees at The University of Vermont where he conducted his dissertation research with Dr. Paula Tracy investigating the mechanisms by which procoagulant ‘COATed’ platelets interact with coagulation factors to regulate thrombin formation and effect thrombosis and hemostasis. He subsequently completed his internal medicine residency and fellowship training in hematology and oncology at Duke University where he pursued his post-doctoral training with Dr. Maureane Hoffman investigating the roles of platelet binding and activity in the efficacy of recombinant Factor VIIa as a hemostatic agent. This work included the first demonstration that human platelets are capable of expressing endothelial protein C receptor and suggested a role for this protein in effecting the tissue factor-independent hemostatic activity of Factor VIIa. Dr. Fager’s ongoing clinical and research interests focus on determining how procoagulant platelets store and regulate the expression of novel surface proteins that facilitate hemostasis and utilizing these mechanisms to improve therapeutic agents and clinical outcomes for patients with life-threatening bleeding.
