Peter K MacCallum, MD, FRCP, FRCPath, is a Clinical Reader in Haematology at Queen Mary University of London and Consultant Haematologist at Barts Health NHS Trust (St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London Hospitals) where he has been the Thrombosis Service Lead since 1995 and served as Head of the Department of Clinical Haematology 2004-16. He is the Chief Medical Officer at the Thrombosis Research Institute in London.
Dr MacCallum has been Principal Investigator in a number of trials of the direct oral anticoagulants for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation and in the management of venous thromboembolism. He was the UK National Co-ordinating Investigator for the GARFIELD-VTE registry and Chief Investigator of the ORANGE study examining major bleeding outcomes in patients on oral anticoagulants. He is a member of the steering committees for a number of ongoing clinical trials in the field of venous thrombosis prevention and treatment and has also served on a number of NICE committees.
He has co-authored two editions of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists green-top guidelines on the prevention of venous thromboembolism during pregnancy and the puerperium and the most recent British Society for Haematology Thrombophilia guidelines and has published papers and book chapters in the field of thrombosis and anticoagulation.
