Muriel Meiring is an Associate Professor and Principal Scientist in the Department of Haematology and Cell Biology at the National Health Laboratory Service and University of the Free State at Bloemfontein, South Africa. Prof Meiring established the Specialised Haemostasis Laboratory at the University of the Free State as a reference centre for von Willebrand Disease (VWD) in South Africa. The laboratory also enjoys international recognition as a reference laboratory. She also collaborates with laboratories in Belgium, Hungary and Australia, not only on research regarding VWD but also on the development of antithrombotic agents and diagnostic kits and microparticle contribution to haemostatic disorders. She is the inventor of 3 South African patents and 2 provisional international patents and the author of more than 40 peer-reviewed publications. She furthermore chairs the Research and Development Committee of the National Health Laboratory Service and besides her PhD and MBA degrees, she recently obtained her D Med Sc degree.
