Postdoc
Medical University of Vienna
Waltraud C. Schrottmaier, PhD, holds an independent PostDoc position at the Institute of Vascular Biology and Thrombosis Research at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria.
Waltraud’s fascination with molecular mechanisms of human disease was already sparked during high school when she first learned about Mendelian inheritance, steering her into the field of biology. Waltraud received her master’s degrees in 2012 from the University of Vienna where she studied Genetics/Microbiology and Anthropology. After working on FGFR signalling in the context of hepatocellular carcinoma for her Master’s theses, she decided to switch fields for her PhD and joined the group of Alice Assinger and thereby the Vienna Platelet Lab. Little did she know how quickly she would get hooked on these fabulous cells!
During her PhD Waltraud investigated interactions of platelets with innate leukocytes, in particular the role of platelet PI3K signalling in the context of inflammation and infection. After graduating in 2016, she joined the lab of Mattias Forsell at Umeå University, Sweden, for postdoctoral training where she studied the physiologic function of platelet-derived IgGs for virus neutralization as well as platelet-mediated immune responses.
In September 2018 Waltraud re-joined the Vienna Platelet Lab and also heads her own projects on the role of platelets and platelet-pathogen interactions in viral and bacterial infection.
