Thomas Diacovo, MD, Professor of Pediatrics and Pharmacology at the University of Pittsburgh, is the new Director of Neonatal Research and Director of Translational Neonatal Medicine at Magee-Womens Research Institute (MWRI). His goal is to help build world class programs that encompass basic science, translational and clinical research focused on rapid WGS in the NICU, neonatal sepsis, NEC, thrombosis with emphasis on neonatal cardiac patients, and racial and socioeconomic disparities that contribute to infant mortality in underserved communities. Prior to that time, he served as Chief of UPMC Division of Newborn Medicine during which he instituted many new quality, safety and diversity initiatives leading to improved outcomes for premature babies, a rise in USNWR rankings from 48 to 15, and the hiring of underrepresentation racial / ethnic groups as faculty.
