Postdoctoral Associate
Weill Cornell Medicine
Serena Lucotti, PhD, is a Senior Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine, New York. She obtained her B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Pisa, Italy, in 2011. During this time, she trained as cancer biologist in the laboratory of Dr. Giuseppe Rainaldi at the Institute of Clinical Physiology, National Research Council, (CNR-IFC), Pisa, IT. She then earned her Ph.D. in Radiobiology in the Department of Oncology at the University of Oxford, UK, in 2017, working in the laboratory of Prof. Ruth Muschel. Her research focused on the interplay between platelets and tumor cells during cancer progression, and helped identifying the role of platelet prostanoid signaling in the establishment of blood-borne metastasis. She also collaborated with Dr. Timothy Warner at Queen Mary University of London and Dr. Anne Ridley at King’s College London to develop assays to study platelet response to tumor cell stimuli both in vivo and ex vivo. After completing her Ph.D., Serena joined the laboratory of Dr. David Lyden at Weill Cornell Medicine to further pursue her interest in the crosstalk between tumor cells and the coagulation system in the context of cancer. She is currently investigating the contribution of immune cell-derived exosomes to cancer-associated coagulopathies, with the aim of identifying targets for thromboembolism prevention and biomarkers to stratify cancer patients at high risk of progression and coagulation-related comorbidities. Throughout her career, Serena has authored a series of highly-cited research articles and reviews, and has received several international awards and federal grants, including a DoD Horizon Award. She currently serves as member of the Early Career Council of the Metastasis Research Society.
