Sophie Hordijk (Msc) is a PhD student in the department of Hematology at the Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Her research under the supervision of dr. ir. Ruben Bierings focuses on the molecular mechanisms of secretion in endothelial cells. Defects in these mechanisms can result in impaired release of the hemostatic protein Von Willebrand Factor, thereby causing bleeding problems. A unique tool in her research is the use of patient derived endothelial cells as a model to study specific mutations that cause secretion defects.
