Associate Professor
Christian Medical College and Hospital Vellore
I am Dr Tulasi Geevar, MD Pathology, Associate Professor, Department of Transfusion Medicine and Immunohematology, Christian Medical College, Vellore. My work in the department includes reporting of peripheral smears and bone marrow, interpretation of flow cytometry tests, and diagnosis/evaluation of bleeding and thrombotic disorders. I am currently a member of the Laboratory Scientific committee of World Federation of Haemophilia (WFH). I have been a trainer/resource person in CMEs and coagulation workshops, including workshops done in collaboration with WFH and AHAD-AP.
Christian Medical College, Vellore is a large tertiary referral centre and teaching hospital with over 2500 beds located in South India. Our department offers a comprehensive 24x7 laboratory service to the entire hospital and deals with about 4000 blood samples for CBC and over 500 samples for Haemostasis screening per day. The state of the art haemostasis laboratory has been enlisted by NIBSC during the last 10 years as an expert laboratory to assign values to WHO IS (International Standard).
I have a keen interest in the area of hemostasis, which both intrigues and fascinates me !
It is thought that approximately 75% of people around the world with bleeding disorder still receive inadequate treatment or have no access to diagnosis. Acquired bleeding conditions like trauma and post-partum haemorrhage still continue to be a major problem in India. I believe that to address these problems it is essential to train and educate laboratory personnel and doctors involved in the area of hemostasis. Also there is an imminent need to improve the laboratory infrastructure and improvise cost effective strategies.
Being in a tertiary care hospital well equipped with good laboratory infrastructure, large sample volume and expert leadership, I would ike to contribute to bridge this gap through training, education and empowerment.
