Lisa Yamaura, BHK, MKin; McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, Alberta.
Lisa uses thrombelastography (TEG) and dynamic, fluorescent imaging of platelets (procoagulant membrane dynamics, PMD) to evaluate temporal changes in coaguation and platelet activation, respectively, in patients who have undergone orthopaedic surgery. As individuals with cancer are known to exhibit hypercoagulabolity and increased risk for thromboembolic complications, she is specifically investigating patients with metastatic bone disease (MBD; cancer that has spread to bone). Lisa aims to use the results of this study to support the development of guidelines for thromboprophylaxis that are appropriate, effective, and personalized for patients with MBD.
