Dr Michiel Coppens works as an internist in vascular medicine and hemophilia at the Amsterdam University Medical Centers (UMC). He obtained a PhD in Medicine under supervision of Harry Büller and Saskia Middeldorp on studies on (testing for) inherited thrombophilia and successfully defended his thesis entitled Thrombophilia in 2008. In 2011 he spent one year at the McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada for research on direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). In 2012 Michiel joined of the Haemophilia Treatment Center of the Amsterdam UMC, where he heads the clinic for adult patients with hemophilia and allied bleeding disorders. In hemophilia research, he mainly collaborates with Karin Fijn van Draat, Samantha Gouw and other Dutch hemophilia doctors. He is actively involved in trials on gene therapy for hemophilia A and B and was the first to treat a person with hemophilia with gene therapy in the Netherlands in 2015. In thrombosis, he mainly collaborates with Nick van Es, Thijs van Mens, Pieter-WIllem Kamphuisen, Saskia Middeldorp and Harry Büller on cancer-associated thrombosis, catheter-associated thrombosis in patients with parenteral nutrtition, reversal of anticoagulation, and antiphospholipid syndrome. He is the chair of the working group on Thrombosis & Haemostasis of the NVIVG (Dutch Society for Internists Vascular Medicine). He is a member of the working group on Gene Therapy of the European Association for Haemophilia and Allied Disorders (EAHAD). He is a author on 103 peer-reviewed publications and has a Hirsch index of 26.
