Danique Steeghs, MSc, is a Manager Assay Development at Enzyre, Nijmegen. She completed her bachelor's in 2017, with a major in medical microbiology. Afterward, she continued her studies with a master's in Molecular Life Sciences with an internship at Enzyre. Enzyre is a spin-off company from Radboudumc, where they specialize in blood coagulation and point-of-care solutions. The R&D department of Enzyre develops a point-of-care platform that can monitor multiple blood coagulation levels in small plasma samples. The first goal is to demonstrate feasibility for patients with hemophilia A. The platform includes dried assay reagents, microfluidic structures, and Single Photon Avalanche Diode sensors. Danique works on miniaturized assays based on chemiluminescence that can translate to the point-of-care platform. One of the projects demonstrated the feasibility of a miniaturized quantitative FVIII assay in microfluidic cartridges. Another research project resulted in the first evaluation of the miniaturized Thrombin Generation Assay in only 0.1 µL. This project included spiked FEIBA samples spanning the medically relevant range and Hemophilia A plasma samples with and without FVIII inhibitors. Both projects conducted at Enzyre demonstrated the feasibility of the miniaturized chemiluminescent-based assays with specific blood coagulation analytes. Future research projects are focused on other analytes correlating to different blood coagulation disorders.
