Postdoctoral Research Fellow
University of Birmingham
Rachel Stapley, Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at University of Birmingham, UK.
I obtained my BSc in Human Biology from Loughborough University, UK in 2015. From here I moved to work at the West Midlands Regional Genetics Laboratory, Birmingham, UK running a clinical testing facility for the diagnosis of inherited blood disorders and malignancies. I have a keen interest in inherited platelet disorders and cardiovascular genetics and in 2018 began my PhD under the supervision of Prof. Neil Morgan and Prof. Steve Watson in Cardiovascular Sciences at the University of Birmingham. During my PhD I used genetically modified animal models to study how SLFN14 mutations cause inherited thrombocytopenia and bleeding in patients. Remaining in Birmingham, in July 2021 I began working as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow using animal models alongside in vitro iPS cell culture to understand how SLFN14 mutations can influence myeloid lineage commitment leading to both platelet and erythrocyte disorders. In my projects I am elucidating the mechanisms of SLFN14 mediated lineage commitment in haematopoiesis and key interactions driving platelet dysfunction in patients. I also have a developing interest in platelet-erythrocyte interactions in hemostasis and thrombosis in health and disease with particular focus on clot structure and stability in the context of erythrocyte disorders.
