Katrin Schäfer studied Medicine at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, where she also performed her M.D. thesis at the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. Following post-doc studies at the Department of Vascular Biology, The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, USA, she established her own lab at the Department of Cardiology, University of Göttingen, Germany, focussing on the importance of adipokines for arterial thrombosis and remodeling processes. Here, she obtained her 'Habilitation' in Experimental Internal Medicine and was appointed as Junior Professor for 'Atherosclerosis Research'. Since 2013, Katrin Schäfer is Professor of Translational Vascular Biology at the Department of Cardiology, University Medical Center Mainz, Germany. Her research interests include arterial and venous thrombosis, thrombosis (non-)resolution and fibrosis and vascular signaling during remodeling. Her work has been continuously funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft). Katrin Schäfer also is a Principal Investigator of the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (Deutsches Zentrum für Herz-Kreislauf-Forschung e.V.; Rhine-Main site).
