PhD Candidate
Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry
Dr Anthon Thaventhiran MBBS MSc MRCS MFSTEd, PhD Candidate, Centre for Trauma Science, Blizard Institute, Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry.
I studied medicine at Barts and the London, undertaking an intercalated BSc in clinical materials on the novel use of nanocapsules as a drug delivery vector. I developed an interest in trauma care at medical school and spent my elective comparing outcomes of the Royal London to Massachusetts General Hospitals. I am a General Surgery Registrar and joined the Centre in April 2018 to undertake a PhD. My ambition is to become an academic trauma surgeon. I have been awarded the Rosetrees & Vandervell Surgical Research Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the British Medical Association Medical Research Foundation ‘Lift into Research’ grant and the Barts Charity Clinical Research Training Fellowship.
My research interest is looking at discovering novel therapeutics to treat Acute Traumatic Coagulopathy (ATC). Novel therapeutics which target the underlying pathology of ATC have the potential to improve outcomes from trauma haemorrhage.
I am the past Director of Education for the Association of Surgeons in Training and helped set up the Major Trauma Training Interface Group (TiG) Fellowships and sat on their interview panel. I have an MSc from the Royal College of Physicians of London in Medical Education. I am a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Faculty of Surgical Trainers.
In my free time, I enjoy travelling and cycling.
