Murdoch Children's Research Institute
Professor Vera Ignjatovic PhD EMBA is a ground breaker and an internationally recognised expert across the fields of paediatric haematology and proteomics, a feat rarely achieved in medical research.
In a field where only 15% of women reach the level of professor, Vera has broken through this significant barrier and provides a real-life example for women starting out in medical research. You can’t be what you can’t see is a motto that guides Vera’s advocacy for diversity, inclusion and gender equality. She is a member of the advisory board for the Women in Science Parkville Precinct (WiSPP) committee, and a formal and informal mentor to students and staff at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. She is committed to encouraging the next generation of women medical researchers as a supervisor for undergraduate and graduate students, and has mentored high school students as part of the Australian Government’s Scientists in Schools Programme.
Vera’s international recognition is evident through her leadership roles in the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, as well as the Human Proteome Organisation. Vera is the scientific lead on the Harmonising Pathology Parameters in Kids (HAPPI Kids) project which has established normative data for age appropriate reference intervals in haematology, immunology, and biochemistry for the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Royal Women’s Hospitals, as well as other laboratories throughout the state of Victoria.
Professor Ignjatovic represents the new generation of adaptive scientists who recognise the critical importance of building bridges between academia, industry, startups, service providers and government; and has actively created a knowledge network of innovation and transformation mentors, mentees, advisors and collaborators from far wider than the health and science discipline, across local and international borders.
