Khalid Naseem is a Professor of Cardiovascular Biology in the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medtabolic Medicine at the University of Leeds (UK). The focus of research in Khalid's laboratory is identifying the molecular and cellular mechanism(s) that lead to platelet hyperactivity, which can in turn contribute to atherogenesis and atherothrombosis in the context of metabolic disorders such as dyslipidaemia and dysglycaemia. Key to the work is the role of a surface protein called cluster of differentiation 36 (CD36), a multifunctional receptor acts as a fatty acid transporter and scavenger receptor that sensors immunological and metabolic changes in the blood. Ongoing studies are examining how distinct CD36 ligands differentially control haemostasis and while also promoting pathological thrombosis is disease states.
