Mike Laffan is Professor of Haemostasis and Thrombosis in the Department of Haematology at Imperial College, London, UK, and Director of the Hammersmith Hospital Haemophilia Centre, London, UK. He trained in medicine at the University of Oxford, UK, and in haematology at the Hammersmith and Royal Free Hospitals in London. His principal research interest is the structure–function relationship of von Willebrand factor, in particular the role of glycosylation, and the mechanisms and regulation of thrombin generation.
He has published extensively on haemostasis and edited the 12th edition of Practical Haematology. Professor Laffan also chaired the British Society for Haematology Task Force on Haemostasis and Thrombosis for six years and the United Kingdom Haemophilia Centre Doctors' Organisation (UKHCDO) von Willebrand disease working party until 2020. He is currently chair of the BSH Guidelines Executive.
